About half the people in the United States believe global warming is a hoax. That's what the polls are indicating. How could that be when the evidence for climate change is endorsed by virtually all of the world's scientists not on energy company payrolls?
It appears that many climate deniers rely on sources like Fox News for their information. Fox viewers are mostly conservative thinkers, who wish they were living in a world that hasn't existed for half a century. They believe their evangelical preachers, who demonize with false claims that stronger hurrricanes, more powerful tornadoes, more frequent wildfires, and killer draughts are 'God's punishment' for society's tolerance of gays and abortion.
In fact, the science behind climate change is not complicated. It is caused by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. It is caused by our meat-centric diets, that depend on billions of cattle, hogs, and chickens, whose flatulence and poop translates into huge quantities of methane that end up in Earth's atmosphere. The vehicles we depend on to get around, and to move our goods and services to market, produce huge amounts of heat-trapping atmospheric pollution. The amount of carbon based greenhouse gas in Earth's atmosphere has reached 400 parts per million. That might sound like a small number, but it's enough to elevate temperatures on Earth to levels not seen in millions of years. The arctic and sub-arctic parts of Canada, Alaska, and Europe have already experienced average temperature rises of 4-7 degrees in the last fifty years.
The consequences are visible for all to see. In the US, the worst of it seems to be happening in the southeast and southwest, the very parts of the country where climate denial seems to be most virulent. The people who dismiss climate change as a hoax are getting hammered the hardest. They need to wake up. The time for remedial action is running out.
