Up Close with a Giant Squid

The TED conferences have become well known for their cutting edge presentations on a wide range of issues and subjects.

The giant squid has been a creature of legend since Jules Verne included a submarine-sized specimen in his novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.   Seafarers have reported glimpses of giant squid 20 meters long,  but until now, no one had ever seen a live specimen in its natural element...deep in the ocean.

Marine scientist Edith Widder proposed a unique approach to the hunt for the semi-truck sized squid. She and her collaborators built a submersible designed for quiet operations. They added a bio luminescent lure and the rest is history.

Edith Widder and her colleagues captured high definition video of the giant creature never before seen using their innovative technique. They estimate the size of the squid in their video to have been more than 12 meters long and a ton in weight.

Here is a link to Edith Widder's TED presentation of the first video ever obtained of the giant squid in its natural, deep ocean realm.  http://www.ted.com/talks/edith_widder_how_we_found_the_giant_squid.html
